Estate Planning

Depending on your clients’ current needs and hopes for the future, a charitable trust or bequest could help fulfill their philanthropic, tax planning and wealth transfer goals. This is especially true if your client would like to support, in perpetuity, a particular cause; champion a broad field of interest, such as social justice or the arts in Napa County; or, “just give something back” when the time is right.

To discuss the Community Foundation’s estate planning services, please contact Terence Mulligan by email, or call 707.254.9565.

Charitable Trusts
A charitable remainder trust provides income to a donor or a named beneficiary for life. Upon the death of the final beneficiary, the principal of the trust is distributed to the Community Foundation.

A charitable lead trust is one from which income payments are made to the charity for a specified time period, after which the asset is transferred back to the donor, or to the donor’s heirs.

Bequest
A bequest can be made by attaching a codicil to your client’s will. The Community Foundation acts as a steward for the funds, ensuring that your client’s specified charitable interest is carried out in perpetuity. A donor also may direct his or her bequest to the Community Foundation, itself a public charity that has been serving our community since 1994. Bequests to the Community Foundation are given to our Community Endowment.
