From Philanthropy News Digest: Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund Launched

AUGUST 29, 2014

Established in partnership with the Napa Valley Community Foundation, the Napa Valley Community Disaster Relief Fund will provide financial support to address the immediate needs of county residents who were affected by the quake, as well as short-term assistance to those in need of temporary housing, home repairs, and medical care and counseling. The fund also will make grants to help local businesses reopen, and will invite nonprofit organizations in the area to apply for assistance aimed at getting them back up and running. The fund is waiting to see whether it will need to augment government relief efforts, which have yet to be detailed.

The initial funds will come from proceeds of NVV’s annual charity auction; NVCF expects to receive additional contributions from individual, corporate, and foundation donors. The foundation plans to develop eligibility criteria for recipients with input from nonprofit and government stakeholders; select additional partners as needed to ensure that funds flow quickly to those most in need; and establish safeguards to secure proper distribution of the funds.

“Hundreds of homes and businesses in the local community were damaged by this disaster,” said Russ Weis, NVV board chair and general manager of Silverado Vineyards. “Residents and business owners in the heart of the City of Napa, south of the city, including American Canyon, and surrounding neighborhoods were especially impacted. The fund will provide resources and assistance to support the community as it rebuilds.”
