CLS was launched by Napa Valley Community Foundation (NVCF) as part of its One Napa Valley Initiative (ONVI) in 2013, a visionary campaign aimed at nurturing a more inclusive Napa County, and to provide immigrant legal services and pathways for Valley residents to feel secure and engaged in the future of the community. In 2012, NVCF commissioned a Napa County immigration study that revealed that while many foreign-born residents were eligible to become citizens, they had not done so nearly as often as their peers around the state (30% in Napa vs. 37% in CA overall) due to the absence of a robust and affordable legal services infrastructure.

Since its inception, the Initiative has accomplished considerable milestones. We’ve reached more than 100,000 individuals with information about the opportunities and responsibilities of citizenship, provided more than 10,000 clients with legal consultations, and have proudly witnessed nearly 2,300 individuals become U.S. citizens.
